Local Museum Volunteer Information

Volunteering in local museums, galleries, and archives is a great way to get your foot in the door, especially if you want a career in the heritage sector. It helped me get a paid internship through Young Canada works this past summer because I was able to gain some experience handling and organizing artifacts. Before that, I had trouble finding jobs in museums, and I felt like there was nothing out there.

When I decided to find somewhere local to volunteer, I spent a couple hours looking up museums and emailing them. So, I figured I could make this database, with the help of UMHISA, to have everything in one place. Below, you’ll find a list of local institutions that provided a summary of tasks they’d like done, and how you can join their team!

If you’re worried about balancing a time commitment with university work, and other jobs, don’t worry. Volunteering can be a casual commitment, going in once every 1-2 weeks if you need.

  • The Winnipeg Railway Museum is located in Union Station at 123 Main Street in Winnipeg.  It has artifacts ranging from small model trains to full size locomotives and train cars.   While the museum is closed for renovations, we need volunteers to vacuum the large vehicles, organize small artifacts, and write articles about some of the artifacts for our newsletter and website.  When the museum reopens there will be more volunteering options.

Volunteers must be able to climb a long flight of stairs to access the museum.  Volunteer shifts in the museum are 3 to 4 hours.  Volunteers need to fill in a form with their name, address and contact information.  We will consider your areas of interest when assigning tasks.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Winnipeg Railway Museum, please contact the volunteer coordinator for more information and to discuss your skills and areas of interest.

If curation or archival work is specifically what a student is looking for, opportunities in this area are quite limited. The closest fit within our institution would be the Eaton’s Fairytale Vignettes exhibit, which is seasonal and considered on a case-by-case basis. That said, all prospective volunteers must still begin with our standard volunteer intake process outlined below.

    Volunteer Intake & Application Steps:

We host two intake periods each year: Spring (for summer opportunities) and Fall (for ongoing opportunities).

Check out our website to see when the next Volunteer Information Session is scheduled.

Interested students must complete a Volunteer Application Form (available on our website) and register to attend an Information Session.

Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Those under 18 must attend the session with a parent or guardian and bring two pieces of ID.

  • We are open 2 afternoons a week & all Volunteers must work with a Board Member present. We are often at work when the Museum is closed preparing Special Events & welcome volunteer assistance then.

There are a number of areas we could provide experience for university students.

--We are a small museum that shows 4 Exhibits / year.  The Board selects topics that are relevant & interesting to the public. These Exhibits require research, artifact selection, mounting the mannequins & artistic presentation.

--We participate in First Fridays in the Exchange, providing brief workshops & information on our Exhibits.

--We hold an annual Fabric Sale for fabrics, notions & patterns

--We hold spring & fall Vintage Sales as well as Alleyways Market.

--We have a warehouse with over 35,000 items. Ladies involved there have a weekly Friday, 9-2 commitment accessioning, repairing & repacking our collection.

--We loan garments & mannequins to other museums under strict policies.

    --We hold terrific Hat Shows.

--Presently, we have an archivist on our Board. She has just begun a project sorting & eliminating several decades of files.

Currently, we are in need of a social media assistant, assistant treasurer & office assistant.

  • We are interested in having students volunteer as a way to develop skills and have quality job related experiences. We would be interested to have students work on collections management (cataloguing, database and possibly hands on work) or assistance with events. But we have a lot of flexibility, so we might be able to have students do other tasks too.  It is preferred we meet with students to develop a task list. If you are interested, email us and we can discuss further.

The Museum occupies three spaces in Minto Armoury at 969 St Matthew Avenue: an office and archives, an artifacts storage room, and the Museum (three rooms).

  • Tasks can be what the student is interested in as we have a lot to do around here. But we do expect all our volunteers to greet guests during opening hours, answer basic questions and help with cleaning our displays. Besides that, there is work to do everywhere, tours, archiving, researching, digitizing records, restoration and preservation, etc. The work here is mostly volunteer led.

We ask that anyone interested sends us an email and just tells us briefly any pertinent information about themselves, what program they’re in and how far along, if they’ve worked in a museum before, what they’d be wanting to do etc. We are more than happy to give volunteers references letters, or sign for volunteer hours.
